Dark spots - they don't have to be forever!

Typically when I get together with my girl friends the conversation will almost always turn to skin care.  “What can I do about this wrinkle? What about this dark spot?” First of all I will say that my girlfriends are beautiful and I usually find myself squinting really hard to see exactly what concern they are pointing to. But dark spots, no matter how small, can be unsightly and make you look older than you really are.  This is a skin issue that I deal with every day in our clinic, with women of all ages.  And it’s one that I have struggled with personally for many years.

Dark spots or hyperpigmentation can be caused by many factors - sun damage, acne scarring, and even hormone fluctuations. When the skin is damaged, our immune system triggers a response of melanocyte activity to protect the skin’s DNA from damage. What we are left with is an accumulation of dark spots that can age our appearance as much as a wrinkle can.

There are procedures and products that can help minimize hyperpigmentation.  I have chemical peels that are designed to improve the appearance of hyperpigmented skin. The nice things about these peels is that not only do they target the dark spots but they will improve texture and tone of your skin. 

However, I will caution my clients that this is only part of the process. Hyperpigmented areas are stubborn and typically are deep beneath the skin’s surface. Without ongoing treatment, they will resurface. For long term success, I suggest that my clients stay on an easy, yet strict, home care regimen. By following this regimen they can expect significant improvement.

Live Beautifully At Any Age - Facial Rejuvenation for the young and the young at heart

Being a full-service plastic and surgery clinic, we get patients in our office of all ages with a variety of concerns. Some are looking for preventative answers to aging while others are hoping to erase the signs of aging that have already become noticeable.  Today there are many options for a fresher appearance, whether surgical or non-surgical.

We often have patients that want more correction than what an injectable filler can offer them. At this point we consider surgical alternatives.  Options for surgical correction are numerous and are tailored to what will be best for the patient. Examples of such procedures include eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), brow lift, or facelift. Generally speaking, these procedures are for those who are 40 years of age and older.

For younger patients who are concerned with a specific facial area, we have surgical options as well. For example, sometimes we will have a younger patient that is unhappy with the shape of her nose. We find that small surgical changes to the structure of the nose can have subtle, yet pleasing, results. Another benefit to surgical procedures is that the results will last, resetting the hands of time.

Injectable treatments and surgical options do not address surface skin concerns. Healthy skin is the goal of every patient, whether he or she is considering surgery or not. If your skin is uneven in texture or color, dry, and unhealthy-looking, you can appear older.
